In Tartous, within a safe space that brought together participants from diverse backgrounds to discuss their daily experiences with digital content and social media, SYCAC Organization conducted two Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) as part of the Echoes of Peace Project, which has been launched across several Syrian governorates, including Tartous. The project aims to better understand the dynamics of hate speech in Syria.
Participants discussed the nature of the digital content they encounter on a daily basis and its impact on their interactions within their social environment. Key discussion themes included trust in media and credible sources of information, as well as gender-related patterns in exposure to hate speech and responses to it.
These sessions represent the third component of a comprehensive research methodology that combines field surveys, digital monitoring, and focus group discussions. The objective is to understand hate speech as it is experienced by people in Syria and to identify alternative narratives emerging from communities themselves narratives that challenge hate speech and contribute to informing peacebuilding programs.
