The contribution of Syrian women to peacebuilding extends beyond formal political processes; it is observed even in the simple social life of Syria, which diverges from the spotlight of political peacebuilding operations and the restructuring of organizations and institutions.
The involvement of Syrian women in social peacebuilding involves clarifying and building relationships, dealing with feelings of fear, hatred, and resentment generated by war, debunking preconceived positions and opinions, and bridging and respecting beliefs and values. They have different methods and diverse areas in playing this role, including negotiation, bridging perspectives, meeting different needs that may be causes of conflicts and disputes. This ranges from ensuring an adequate amount of food in the household to prevent disputes among children, to resolving conflicts over matters such as inheritance, land, revenge, and even social pressure for compromise in intense disputes. In doing so, they contribute to bridging the gap, averting potential risks, preemptively addressing social issues before they occur, and contributing to the resolution or management of occurring problems to minimize damage and losses. The community naturally produces female figures with exceptional abilities acquired through experience or inherent traits, playing such social roles to contribute to the building of civil peace and maintaining societal cohesion.
This paper seeks to shed light on some traditional practices in peacebuilding carried out by Syrian women in their local communities, appreciating these experiences. It can be said that these contributions contribute to peacebuilding, whether in preventing social problems and conflicts or in solving these problems when they occur, managing them in a way that ensures their non-escalation or minimizing harm when the solution is difficult or impossible.
