The participation of Syrian women in peacebuilding has extended far beyond involvement in official political processes. Their involvement has become more pronounced in local peacebuilding and primarily in the fabric of daily social life – a domain often overlooked in discussions about peacebuilding initiatives.
During the conflict in Syria, the contribution of Syrian women in enhancing social peace became evident.
This was achieved through clarification and building relationships, addressing feelings of fear, hate, and resentment generated by war or societal issues. They also debunked preconceived positions, challenged entrenched biases, and fostered an environment of mutual respect for diverse beliefs and values.
Through a range of roles and methods, Syrian women, particularly those who haven't had real empowerment opportunities through programs provided by civil society organizations, utilize negotiation, mediation, and active listening. Their aim is to soothe tensions and meet diverse needs to facilitate harmony among parties. Their interventions span from preventing domestic conflicts, such as ensuring food abundance to prevent sibling quarrels (given that Syrian women, due to their exclusive household roles, bear the responsibility for household management and childcare), to resolving disputes arising from various family or community issues like inheritance, land, revenge, which at times escalate into armed conflicts, particularly during the Syrian conflict and the widespread proliferation of arms. Additionally, they employ awareness and social pressure to encourage compromise in severe disputes.
This way, they contribute to bridging gaps, preempting potential risks, addressing social issues before they escalate, and contributing to solving or managing existing problems to minimize possible harm and losses.
Societies naturally produce exceptional female figures, either through experience or innate abilities, who undertake such social roles to contribute to civil peace-building and maintaining societal cohesion.
These exceptional women leverage their innate abilities and accumulated experiences to bridge divides, preempt potential conflicts, proactively manage existing issues, and mitigate harm and losses.
